WORD (Washington Organization for Reading Development) is a state affiliate of the International Reading Association formed in 1954 under the direction of Florence Sperling. In 1960 WORD was incorporated and continues to support educators throughout Washington. As a non-profit professional development organization WORD is dedicated to supporting all persons who are concerned with literacy and encourages groups and individuals at all levels to implement good reading practices.
